In The Name of God The Benificent The Merciful

  Introduction

The Holy Quran is one of the most widely read books in the world, it has been translated in almost all the major languages of mankind. In the background of history, the message of the Quran shines as a dazzling focus of a vigorous monotheistic faith.

Selections from the Quran, the present work, attempts to give in English selections from the Quran for the benefit of those who do not have the time or facility to read its full text. The selections are based mostly on translation of the Holy Quran by Marmaduke Pickthall but in some cases other translations have also relied upon. While compiling it, I was fully aware that a translation, however well done, cannot convey the beauty and force of the original. I was also aware of my own limitations, being neither a scholar nor an “Alim”. My humble work is made with love and reverence which I hope will draw the reader to the complete text, every word of which, being a revelation and outpouring of divine inspiration, constitutes the Quran.

The Quran was revealed by God over a period of 23 years to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The Arabic of the Quran is pre-Quranic and classical, some of the words can be translated in more than one way. Therefore some of these Ayaats (verses) can be fully understood if we learn the context, situation and period when they were revealed. No translation can do complete justice in conveying the poetic beauty of the original nor the exact and comprehensive meanings of words.

I do hope that my work would mitigate the unwarranted prejudice and bias that is widespread, and, above all, prove that the fundamentals of Islam as expounded in the Quran are not exactly as the extremist or the so-called ‘fundamentalists’, both from among the ‘believers’ and the ‘non-believers’, would have us believe.

Hopefully you will find this site helpful and useful.
